Fantasy Author Jim C. Hines writes this on his website: (which has more examples):
"In January of 2012, I decided that I wanted to talk about science fiction and fantasy cover art, particularly the ways women were portrayed. At first, I thought about writing a long blog post, talking about how saturated we were with imagery that emphasized women as sexual objects at the expense of power, agency, realism, and so on.Then I decided there might be a more effective way to encourage discussion. With assistance and surprisingly little eye-rolling or laughter from my wife, I contorted myself into the poses of women on various SF/F covers. Things snowballed from there. I did several follow-up photoshoots, ran a cover-posing fundraiser, and was even honored with a Hugo award that year." Halloween's coming up, and it's a good time to point out that in the film industry someone can have a job where all they do is makeup or effects like this. And if you're interested in trying it out - see Mr. Maller, he's looking for some students who want to help doing zombie style makeup for the fall plays.
hmm... I've got some nice lighting and willing subjects, but I don't want a regular portrait... what can I do to be creative? Is there anything that hasn't been done before? Yes. More pics here: "Something as simple as a roll of Scotch tape can transform faces in a not-so-pretty way. In fact, the Scotch Tape series of photos shot by Wes Naman borders on horrifying. Who knew tape could turn regular peoples' faces into such grotesque abominations?" Lights are great to add interesting shadows, but check to make sure you're getting all the right ones you want, and not any you don't want. :) Portraits of 4 sisters every year for 36 years. Here. Great black and white photographs, and I like seeing how people age. Need an idea for your "frozen" photo assignment?
New fun photo meme in Japan: Creating fake anime fight scenes. Details here. Looks so awesome!!!!!!!! Apparently a Dragonball Z movie comes out in a month. Take a historical photo, and a new photo, and superimpose them on top of each other. That's the essence of this new campaign by the History Channel to "Know Where you Stand". Realize that interesting things may have happened right where you're standing. Did you know that where you sit in Sands used to sit students who fell in love, got married to each other, and had kids, who now go to Sands with you? Crazy to think about, but definitely true. Maybe they're the one who graffitied that desk you're in. Photographer Seth Taras' website here.
Why didn't pictures with the Easter Bunny take off? It seems like such an easy commercialization of an existing holiday - it worked so well with pictures with Santa for Christmas... oh... oh man... here's 45 photos showing why not. A beautiful series of photographs. "My wife Jennifer was diagnosed with breast cancer just 5 months after our wedding and 4 years later she passed.Hoping to show people what day to day life with cancer is like I photographed our life." mywifesfightwithbreastcancer.com |
